Thursday Drive Day #sol23 #day16

On (some) Tuesdays I write about education and then post to the Two Writing Teacher blog. and then comment on at least three other blog posts . Every day in March I will blog and post for the Two Writing Teacher challenge.

Today I drove from Indiana to Colorado. I am still about 2 hours from my final destination. I will be there tomorrow thru Sunday.

There were clouds. There was rain. There was snow. There was sleet. I lost a plastic piece off my Explorer because of heavy winds. There was sun!

I listened to a ton of podcasts along the way. I left voicemail messages for my friend in Missouri.

I made a quick stop in Iowa City to go to Prairie Lights Independent bookstore which was awesome! There are cool houses there that Chris and I have to take a trip back to see. And a cute downtown with restaurants we will have a hard time choosing just one for lunch!

I jotted down lots of notes for writing.

It was a great – but long day.

**Hotels are for Zoom calls with my husband, catching up with WIFI, HGTV, and Food Network!

Wednesday Used to Be #sol23 #day15

On (some) Tuesdays I write about education and then post to the Two Writing Teacher blog. and then comment on at least three other blog posts . Every day in March I will blog and post for the Two Writing Teacher challenge.

Last night I hosted a Slicer Chat and two lovely women who I have known through their blogs and other educational venues stopped by! We had an amazing talk about slicing, teaching, the edu-celebrities we know, and other topics. The hour went fast. Erica has taken over Teach Write so we had a lot to talk about there! Carol’s blog I have read forever and love it!

I left teaching/coaching in the traditional classroom last June. There are many reasons for this decision and I am happy that I made it. It was the right time for me, but conversations last night force me to remember what my teaching life used to look like.

Wednesdays used to be for WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY. When I was coaching in the middle school I would have 2 sessions per month during the common plan time to do some PD related to what the teams and school needed. We all started to look forward to this time to learn something and to also get to know each other better.

Wednesdays used to be for PD and meetings. When I was coaching and teaching in Wisconsin it was the day for PD. During the pandemic, it was an all day affair. After we went back to in person teaching it was an early release for the students. I had separate meetings for coaching so normally had to be a teacher leader in a 2nd grade meeting but most of the time the directions were not clear as to the purpose of that time.

Wednesdays used to be for cluster. When I was a TAP master teacher, a requirement was to lead a weekly one-hour PD based on school goals and teacher need. There were three of these meetings back to back. On Thursdays, I then tried to not talk to anyone! Wednesdays meant a lot of peopling. What I learned from the TAP framework and NIET changed the way I run a meeting in wonderful ways. I was able to have coaching through this process and it helped me professionally.

Wednesdays used to be for teaching and modeling teaching. It used to be for first grade team meetings. It used to be for reading aloud and then creating a writing prompt for that reading. It used to be for singing Dr Jean.

Now Wednesdays are for Centered. I run events for an international writing school and Wednesdays are usually scheduled heavily with Guest Mentors and workshops. I am in the community every day but Wednesdays seem to be the day everyone resets. I prefer it to be today rather than a Monday!

Now Wednesdays are for working from home (normally). Since all things writing is my full time gig now, I spend a lot of time with my husband because most of my work I can do anywhere. The schedule has worked out for him to work from home most Wednesdays so we can get lots of things done personally and professionally.

Today is for preparing to travel and packing. Today is for reading an essay and a poem for my Bradbury Trio within the first hour of waking up. (Still have to read the short fiction piece. ) Today is for prepping beef sandwiches in the crock pot. Today is for writing and reading. Today is for running to the store quickly because I forgot something. Today is for running a meeting for a program I am teaching.

When I taught first grade a long time ago we would often do lists of 10 Things on Tuesday during journal time. Sometimes the kids would come up with better topics than I could!

Tuesday

  1. I am happy to be able to spend the day with my husband. We have great conversations in the car.
  2. Over the past few days, it has snowed in the morning and then it melts. I love winter but am now tired of the snow and am ready for it to stop.
  3. The recreation recipe of my son’s birthday dinner was a success last night! Spicy Ginger Chicken is now part of the regular rotation.
  4. I am looking forward to reading tonight. I am reading a great collection of stories by Ramona Ausubel.
  5. I am hosting a Slicer Zoom later this evening! Email me if you want to come and I will send you the link (writertammyevans@gmail.com) 8pm EST
  6. I have received two writing rejections in two days. It means I am submitting and doing the work!
  7. I miss Ada Limon on The Slowdown. I miss hearing your voice and her choice of poems.
  8. I am getting ready for a trip and although I am excited for the learning and connections, I am a little sad to be away from home.
  9. I need to make chicken saag when I return from my trip.
  10. I have enjoyed the fiction writing I have done the past couple of days in response to my daily prompts.

What ten things would you share today?

The Lie of Daylight Savings #sol23 #day13

On (some) Tuesdays I write about education and then post to the Two Writing Teacher blog. and then comment on at least three other blog posts . Every day in March I will blog and post for the Two Writing Teacher challenge.

Daylight Savings is not my friend.

I was listening to a podcast yesterday and heard that in Arizona they do not participate in this forced jet lag without the trip. Sadly, in Indiana, I have no choice.

Daylight Savings doesn’t save anything. I didn’t save any sunshine by springing ahead an hour. It isn’t in a bottle that I can open when I need it. There isn’t a Sunshine bank account that I can withdraw from.

I have read countless reports that Daylight Savings is not good for your health. There is a concept I read about last year called social jet lag. Losing an hour messes with your rhythms. There are more traffic accidents and heart attacks linked to the practice. It can take some people weeks to not feel sluggish.

Teaching has become more difficult over the last several years and a classroom of groggy children doesn’t help either.

No matter what our situation, we have to adhere to clocks. There is no way to avoid it. There is also no way to opt out of Daylight Savings time. I honestly have no idea why we still do it.

As with many other things, I have to adjust to something outside of my control. I am thankful I did not have to get up super early this morning to be at work or to run. I am also thankful I was not traveling since that has been the case over the past several years.

My hope is the adjustment won’t be as bad this year and I will feel back to normal in less than a week.

How do you feel about daylight savings?

Camp Breakfast #sol23 #day11

On (some) Tuesdays I write about education and then post to the Two Writing Teacher blog. and then comment on at least three other blog posts . Every day in March I will blog and post for the Two Writing Teacher challenge.

A tradition my husband introduced to me is Camp Breakfast. He made it for me for the first time when we were actually camping last October in Minnesota. It was delicious then and he made it this Saturday morning as a treat!

It is a combination of a lot of garlic, sliced new potatoes from the can, onions, Spam, and eggs. The combination may not sound appetizing but it is amazing once all cooked together.

It is one of those dishes that inspire memories as well. Sitting at the table my husband and my brother-in-law were talking about times in Canada when they had it as well as being kids and their mom making it.

It was the perfect way to start the weekend!

Is there food that inspires a particular memory or is a tradition in your family?

  5. Rainbow wind sock

3 Ideas I’m Thinking About

A way to extend the beauty of travel is to recreate some of the meals at home after your return.

Having a life I no longer feel the need to escape from changes everything.

I know what to do, sometimes it is just hard to do it.

2 Quotes from Writers I Admire

The Souvenir Museum by Elizabeth McCracken

She felt wild with various discomforts.

Thunder and Lightning by Natalie Goldberg

For a long time I have emphasized detail with my writing students, but now it is time to pull out the structure behind the detail so we see the fabric that supports us. Who are we? How did we live? Names and details can be an anchor; but what we’re ultimately looking for is below the surface. This deeper truth—the deep structure of our lives—is the key to writing memoir.

1 Question That Came Up in my Writing

What is something that is one use only?

10 Things About Today #sol23 #day8

  5. My shower was hot and I love that! It is my favorite.
  6. I decided now that I am a subscriber to the Paris Review I am going to use it to read at least one poem, one short story, and one essay per week. I wrote about The Bradbury Trio here.
  7. I am drinking lots of water today.
  8. I am looking forward to reading this afternoon!
  9. I wrote with a great prompt today. Write a scene that uses the following words: spelling, apothecary, and widget.

10 Line Tuesday #sol23 #day7

On (some) Tuesdays I write about education and then post to the Two Writing Teacher blog. and then comment on at least three other blog posts . Every day in March I will blog and post for the Two Writing Teacher challenge.

It’s Llama Tuesday! Celebrate accordingly!

Inspired by poet Maya Stein, I have started to write 10 lines each Tuesday.

Sometimes I write a poem like piece and other times I write longer sentences that want to be together.

“Welcome home”
A common phrase heard from Cast Members, welcomed to Walt’s imagination.
My husband, my bed, my routine is a truer use of the phrase.
Today will still include walking and yoga
Hip openers and sun salutations and dolphin pushups and
Writing. Lots and lots of writing.
A 40 degree temperature difference from South to North
I know I am home from the cat asleep on my legs
The kisses and hugs and touch from my love which is really
Welcome Home.

What are your ten lines? Please share in the comments!

Find Your Magic #sol23 #day6

On (some) Tuesdays I write about education and then post to the Two Writing Teacher blog. and then comment on at least three other blog posts . Every day in March I will blog and post for the Two Writing Teacher challenge.

I read the Two Writing Teacher blog way before I started participating in Slices. I didn’t think I was a real writer, or had been teaching long enough to write about it, or whatever self- imposed limitation off an invisible list I was referring to struck my fancy at the time. Now I see slices everywhere. I think big and often have a hard time narrowing my writing down to one event, one moment, one image. As I have studied flash fiction it has gotten easier to see all types of mentor texts to help me remember!

To help myself I have been logging what author Pam Houston calls GLIMMERS. Sensory moments that impact me in some way that I may use for writing later. I can scroll through the list and choose one or several glimmers to meld together to write the piece that day. I am refining this process.

A great place to read Slices is the publication River Teeth. They publish micro-essays and are often filled with sensory details and description that is interesting to read.

The light through the sheer curtain is muted orange and is the color of rainy morning sky and tree limbs full of limbs over the window. I hear water in other units and the blower of the A/C. I am sure if I opened the door the pavement would be wet. It has been that way for 5 days. The sun will be out soon in various degrees of power.

I grasp at the events of the last 5 and do not want them to dissipate like the ghosts of the Haunted Mansion or the steam from my coffee on the nightstand. There are notes and pages written. There is work to be done at home when I get there, but not now.

I am thankful for coffee in the room. My body is tired and whispers to me the things I need to improve over the next few months to feel better in it. The list of to do’s is not too long today, but important. Checklists of times that we need to be one place or that. It is a journey today with a beautiful destination.

Right now, all the light is muted which feels like a slow beginning today. A nice feeling to not be rushed, by my own hand or someone else’s! I breathe deep so I do not mute my own light and think of the adventure of today. We will see how ordinary or extraordinary it is. I always seem to find the magic and today will be no different.

Where will you find magic today?
