Hello! Thank you for chatting with me today.

Sundays around here are for breakfast out together. I have come to love this tradition I have with my husband. He had it established before I came around but he was happy to have me tag along.

If we were having coffee I would tell you my husband put in our kitchen backsplash while I was away! I turned on the light and squealed with delight.

If we were having coffee I would tell you 3 of my favorite teacher blogs I like to read all year, but especially in the March challenge.

  1. Writing to Learn, Learning to Write
  2. Persistence and Pedagogy
  3. Ms Chiubooka Writes

If we were having coffee I would tell you this chicken recipe was a big hit in my house!

If we were having coffee I would tell you when my cat chooses to lay on me, it makes me happy. I think there is something to the idea that cats can heal you with their purring.

If we were having coffee I would tell you school Friday popcorn is the best!

Do you need a refill? Would you like some water?

If we were having coffee I would tell you I am enjoying my run/walks this past week. After almost a week at Disney, I needed to change some habits when I came home. I have run (a lot) in the past but do not want to dedicate the time I did before. I am feeling good and have coupled the runs with yoga. So far, so good.

If we were having coffee I would tell you a random thing that makes me happy is my wedding rings. I love the design and that I am married. My husband had my engagement ring made from a picture I loved years ago. It is special and something that is all ours. He knows what I like!

If we were having coffee I would tell you I submitted some pieces that were rejected over the past 2 weeks.

If we were having coffee I would tell you these are some stories I enjoyed this week:

  1. https://hexliterary.com/?p=1343
  2. https://fracturedlit.com/classified-ad-for-a-ghost/

If we were having coffee I would tell you I want to know what you are obsessed with! Please share in the comments! I am obsessed with the idea baby owls sleep lying down because their heads are too heavy. I am obsessed with turtles. I am obsessed with tarot. I am obsessed with spider rain in Australia. I do hope your week was full of wonderful time with people you love.

Thank you for joining me for a coffee chat! I am already looking forward to next weekend!

Hello! Thank you for chatting with me today. I have some dark roast black coffee in my Disney Resort mug today. Some Mickey waffles also go well that for breakfast!

If we were having coffee I would tell you my Two Writing Teachers challenge is coming along. Later in the week, I am going to be hosting a virtual meeting for other slicers.

If we were having coffee I would tell you I am heading to Animal Kingdom today. We have been in all the other parks starting on Thursday. The weather here has been warmer than I am used to but low humidity. It was almost 90 yesterday which was uncomfortable in certain spots.

Do you need a refill?

If we were having coffee I would tell you I am making all kinds of notes in my phone for stories that will be written next week. There are all types of things around me that have me thinking about structures for stories and collections of stories. Overheard conversation is also a wonderful writer tool!

If we were having coffee I would tell you a writing course I am teaching went live today. It is exciting that people are already posting in the discussion forum!

If we were having coffee I would tell you I had a workshop with poet Maggie Smith last Monday which was amazing. I have always used poetry in my teaching but also find it so inspiring for my own writing. I have been experimenting with using some microfiction as well.

If we were having coffee I would tell you as much as I have loved my time here with my son, I am ready to go home. I miss my husband and our cat! It is wonderful to be living the dreams I have always had. It is truly a gift and I appreciate it every day.

If we were having coffee I would tell you I hope your week was satisfying in all the best ways! I invite you to share something about your week too! What are you looking forward to this week?

Thank you for joining me for a coffee chat! I am already looking forward to next weekend!

3 Questions #SOL23 #Day3

On (some) Tuesdays I write about education and then post to the Two Writing Teacher blog. and then comment on at least three other blog posts Every day in March I will blog and post for the Two Writing Teacher challenge.

Today my inspiration comes from the Tracking Wonder website which I discovered from Monna’s Ease Lessons podcast. The podcast is extremely inspirational to me!

3 Questions to Change My Perspective

These questions came from a newsletter from the author of Tracking Wonder. I have been working with these questions over the course of a week. I am not sure I am happy with my responses, but it has been an interesting exercise.

The process is to ask the same 3 questions every morning for two weeks, and then track your responses. The purpose is to feel a new sense of purpose and mission. It is a way to reset by reminding yourself what you are devoted to.

I chose a Google Doc and put a reminder into my calendar so I get a notification. I also linked the doc in the reminder.

Question 1: The Devotion Question

What am I devoted to today?

The Devotion Question is one key tool not just to fall in love with a fantasy of a big idea but to stand in wonder with making it real.

Keep the devotion to seven words or less. That way you can remember it when you need it.

To think about what I am devoted to on a daily basis sets a tone for the day. It is interesting to pare down what I am devoted to in seven words.

Question 2: The Curiosity Question

What am I curious about today?

Curiosity, wonder’s rebel facet, boosts our mood and propels us into action. Curiosity helps us persist because we have fun along the way.

If you’re not sure about your curiosity, ask yourself one of these questions to get behind your curiosity “What skills do I want to learn? What piece of knowledge do I want or need answered? “

Start your day with this question, and the day becomes more of a quest, even if the quest is mostly internal as you pursue new discoveries.

When you let The Curiosity Question frame your meetings or other chance encounters with people during the day, then every conversation becomes a curiosity conversation.

Some ask themselves, “Who am I curious about today?” to remind themselves that genuine curiosity builds genuine rapport and connection.

I am curious about a lot things and input is my jam, but when I have to write it down and think about it the answer does not come as easily as I would have thought. I allow ideas to come to be organically and then pursue them, so this approach is different.

Question 3: The Possibility Question

What if we______?

This question cannot help but open you up to a little possibility for the day.

>>> What if we found a new way to write a story?

>>> What if we could sync up as a remote writing group once a week for a creative coffee break?

>>> What if we rotated who led the meeting, even if it wasn’t the most obvious person?

Why “we”? It reminds you that pursuing possibility is rarely if ever a solely solo endeavor. Do it together beats do it yourself.

Maybe you already have a question or morning rhythm that sets your day off right. If so, hit “Reply” and let me know.

A life of meaning and possibility is within your reach. Today.

I think moving forward, I am going to think of these questions are more of freewrites and then take all my ideas and make the simple sentences to record. It is still something I am playing with.

Let me know if you try them out!

What are you devoted to and curious about today? What if you tried the questions??

4-4-4 #SOL23 #Day2

On (some) Tuesdays I write about education and then post to the Two Writing Teacher blog. and then comment on at least three other blog posts Every day in March I will blog and post for the Two Writing Teacher challenge.

[Prompt: Look around and choose 4 things within 4 ft. of you and 4 minutes to write about them.]

One sentence each

Inspiration from : https://thecollective257774336.wordpress.com/2022/03/24/4-4-4/

What 4 things are in your immediate area?

My journal from home sits next to me with my favorite pens and I recorded the unsettling dream that woke me up several times during the night.

A pillow is used as a screen to shield the light from devices as I write before I start the day – no coffee yet.

Light starts to peek in the shades and I hear a bird tweet outside which is something I have not heard for months.

My husband’s green t-shirt that I borrowed from him before I left to take my son on a trip to help me bridge missing him.

What would your 4 things be today?

#IWSG March ’23

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer – aim for a dozen new people each time – and return comments. This group is all about connecting!

March Question

The awesome co-hosts for the March 1 posting of the IWSG are Diedre Knight, Tonya Drecker, Bish Denham, Olga Godim, and JQ Rose!

Every month, we announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

Remember, the question is optional!

March 1 question – Have you ever read a line in novel or a clever plot twist that caused you to have author envy?

YES! All the time.

I have learned to write these down so I can learn from them. I use them as mentor texts and models for my own writing.

I have docs in my drive that are full of highlights from books that I have copied.

I also have a wonderful app called READWISE that sends me an email of my highlights from the e-books I read and I love it.

Text Set by Accident #SOL23

On (some) Tuesdays I write about education and then post to the Two Writing Teacher blog. and then comment on at least three other blog posts Every day in March I will blog and post for the Two Writing Teacher challenge.

Last night I hosted my writing group and I always provide space and a prompt for co-writing. There are various ways of sharing that are available for the group that was similar to my classroom sharing rules.

The group of women is varied by age and profession. One friend is a former teacher like me. She taught high school English so the conversation around books is always rich in her company.

Lesson planning is still an everyday activity for me. It is centered around adults now but had been for many years since I was a coach. No matter how long we are out of the classroom setting, we are still thinking about lesson plans and how reading and writing fit together.

I shared the poem BRIDE by Maggie Smith which was recently published in The New Yorker. (I also attended a workshop with her yesterday!)

I read it and then we wrote for 4 minutes. The directions are simple: write what it reminds you of, pull a line or an idea from the text. Write what comes, even if it doesn’t seem to make sense.

I also shared a micro fiction, Ars Poetica, age 4, from The Offing.

The same rules applied. I added they could write two separate pieces or continue the first one.

As always as a teacher of writing, I was blown away by the ideas that emerged from these pieces.

After one writer talked about how she had written about her dad and how he accomplished so much because he had a wife my teacher friend said, ” I have a story that I used to teach to my high schoolers that reminds me of that idea!” and shared it.

That story is I Want a Wife by Judy Brady.

I love it so much that we made a text set right then and there, accidentally from the discussion.

I am so looking forward to jumping into the March Challenge pool with Two Writing Teachers!

January Question

The awesome co-hosts for the January 4 posting of the IWSG are Jemima Pett,Debs Carey,Kim Lajevardi,Sarah Foster,Natalie Aguirre, and T. Powell Coltrin!

Every month, we announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

Remember, the question is optional!

January 4 question – Do you have a word of the year? Is there one word that sums up what you need to work on or change in the coming year? What is your word for 2023?

In 2022 my word was MAGIC. You can read my post about it here.

In 2020 my word was MORE. I wanted more of the essential things in my life and not what other people thought I should have. I wanted more and was tired of apologizing for wanting it. As a teacher, the idea has been cultivated that I am not supposed to want to be paid what I am worth. I was supposed to take the ideals of the mission and just take what I can get. I was done with this thinking. I adopted an abundance mentality, not scarcity.

2019 was CONNECT and I grew my audiences and relationships with other writers.

2023 is the year of depth for me.

For 2023 my word came easily: DEEPEN

My plan is to deepen the experiences and learning I engage in during 2023.

I love to be the resource person and to take a large amount of content and curate it for other people. It is part of why I love to teach. But last year, I found myself feeling like I was just checking off too many things on a list. I wasn’t savoring or learning, just racking up numbers. Part of that was stress and things that only I could do. 2022 was a year of extremes: bliss and trauma.

I do not want to feel that way anymore. I want to savor my life, not just check off days. I want the reading and writing I am doing to be wild and deep. I want to delve into a topic for days and not go wide. I want to push past what I think I want to say until I think I have nothing else to say and see what lies beyond that.

I plan to reread books that I have loved in the past and learn something new from them. The first for January is The Alchemist. This book came to me when I needed it the first time and I read it quickly. I plan to examine it more closely this read and write in response to passages and ideas.

There are other ideas I am exploring around this concept and what it means for me. I am not sure how it fits yet but there is a sharing vs not concept that keeps circling in my head. It is like a crow that won’t land so I am trying to be patient.

What small change will you make today to get yourself closer to the life you want?

Do you already have a word chosen for 2023?

I would love to see it in the comments!

Thank you for joining me on this creative journey. I am excited to see where it leads!

Happy Wintering!

Tammy

If We Were Having Coffee I Would Tell You:

  1. Happy New Year! Normally at this time of year, I am all about answering the lists of reflection questions and making goals and intentions for the coming year. I have intentions and goals but this year I am keeping most of them close to my heart and my inner circle. This past year was full of major events every month. Some traumatic and some blissful. 2022 was a year of extremes for me.
  2. As I sit here and write this to you I am in my office with 3 walls of windows, with a lavender and cedar candle burning, I am overlooking the lake and the bones of trees on this winter day. I am here with my husband, safe and happy in Northwest Indiana.
  3. This morning I came into the new year exactly as I wanted to. My husband and I went to breakfast and I wrote. Then I went for a walk and am writing again. There is more on the agenda for today but I love the writer life I have and am extremely grateful for it.
  4. I walked for 2 hours this morning in the fog and gray. Gray is a mixture of black and white which seems fitting to start 2023 somehow. Podcasts were listened to and notes were made for stories!
  5. There are so many prompts for this month in my inbox it could get overwhelming! A lot of great journaling programs plus the poem I read every morning. I am going to have to make some decisions about what I want to write.
  6. Did you chose a word of the year? My word this year is DEEPEN. This has a lot to do with writing and response to reading. I know what I need to do to level up, I just have to give myself the time and focus to do it. As always, my reflection of my word of the year will continue to expand as I write about it more. The first book I am rereading is The Alchemist. I will be writing more about my #oneword as the year stretches on.

What I’m Up to This Month

  2. Participating in the Six Weeks, Six Senses writing program (link to join below)

If We Were Having Coffee I Would Tell You:

  1. This past Tuesday was busy with calls from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. They were all about writing so they were fueling but it had been a long while since I had to be on Zoom for that long of a stretch.
  2. Chris made his amazing potato soup this week – a secret family recipe!
  3. I am rereading Thunder and Lightning by Natalie Goldberg. There will be a book club on Centered that I will host in the new year. My PUSH group will also be working with this book.
  4. I am thinking about what I want to learn in 2023 and how to plan it out for one new skill a month. I want some of it to be centered around writing, but not everything. I am still thinking about it.
  5. This Wednesday is the Winter Solstice! It will be a special day indeed! There will be lots of celebrating plus a special tarot spread. I am also hosting a Read Like A Writer Book Club session that morning. I always read Robert Frost’s Stopping By The Woods on a Snowy Evening. It is going to be an amazing day!
  6. Our live Christmas tree is in the window. It is the cat’s first tree so he is trying to figure it out.
  7. I finished the stunt memoir, I’m Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want to Come about an introvert who tried to learn from the behaviors of extroverts in order to expand her social circle because she was lonely.
  8. I have been writing about what I think is fun. Truly fun for me. A friend posed this question to me that I cannot seem to let go of. She asked me what it would look like if I just did what I thought was fun. I feel like this should be an easy question, but it is not. What do you think is fun? Share with me, please!
